  13. Macintosh Users to Share Any Document

  15. ALAMEDA, Calif., July 19, 1993--Farallon Computing, 
  16. Inc., supplier of network software and systems, today 
  17. announced Replica(tm), portable document software for 
  18. networked Windows and Macintosh computer users. With 
  19. Replica, users can easily share any document, 
  20. regardless of application, font, graphics or computer 
  21. platform, eliminating the frustration of 
  22. incompatibility between documents and saving the cost 
  23. of buying multiple applications for multiple 
  24. computers.

  26.     After purchasing just a single copy of the 
  27. Replica software, a user is able to create files that 
  28. can be viewed by others, providing them with immediate 
  29. electronic access to formatted information. Replica 
  30. documents can be created from any application with any 
  31. fonts or graphics, and shared with co-workers on 
  32. Windows or Macintosh computers while retaining all 
  33. formatting, fonts and graphics of the original. Users 
  34. viewing Replica documents then can copy any part of 
  35. the document and paste it into another file, or can 
  36. print the Replica document.

  38.     "Most networked computing environments today 
  39. contain a mix of software applications and personal 
  40. computer platforms, yet users on these networks still 
  41. need to share information in the form of electronic 
  42. files," said Alan Lefkof, president of Farallon. "What 
  43. we hear from our customers is that people are tired of 
  44. the chaos in their computing environments and, among 
  45. other things, want a simple way to create and view 
  46. documents without being constrained by applications or 
  47. computer platforms."

  49.     For today's organizations that electronically 
  50. exchange and distribute formatted documents, multiple 
  51. copies of applications or site licenses are required 
  52. so that all recipients are equipped with the 
  53. applications necessary for viewing the documents they 
  54. receive. By using Replica instead of buying 
  55. applications for each user, organizations can save a 
  56. great deal of money.

  58. How Replica Works: A Two-Part Product
  59.  
  60.     Replica consists of the Replica Creator and the 
  61. Replica Viewer. A Replica document can be created from 
  62. any Windows or Macintosh application that can produce 
  63. printed output. Users simply select the Replica 
  64. Creator printer driver, then use the "print" command 
  65. to create an electronic facsimile of the document. The 
  66. Creator captures and compresses the document, with 
  67. users having the option of optimizing for the smallest 
  68. possible file size. The Replica document then can be 
  69. distributed to other users via direct hooks to popular 
  70. electronic mail systems (e. g., Lotus cc:Mail, 
  71. Microsoft Mail). Or, it can be saved to a hard or 
  72. floppy disk.

  74.     The Replica Viewer -- which runs on a 80286-
  75. based (minimum system required by the operating 
  76. system) Windows 3.1 computer or above, or a System 7 
  77. Macintosh ---enables users to view, print, navigate, 
  78. copy and paste information. As an option, the Viewer 
  79. can be included automatically in a Replica file by the 
  80. Creator to generate "self-launching" Replica 
  81. documents, which means that recipients can view 
  82. documents without having Replica installed. Recipients 
  83. of self-launching documents can automatically open the 
  84. Replica file and immediately view and use the 
  85. information it contains. Also, recipients have the 
  86. option of permanently installing the Replica Viewer 
  87. (at no charge) on their computers from a self-
  88. launching Replica document. The Viewer will then 
  89. remain on that computer and can be used to view other 
  90. Replica documents.

  92.     When recipients double click on a Replica 
  93. document, the Viewer extracts and displays the 
  94. information, which appears exactly as the original. 
  95. Recipients then can copy any part of the document, 
  96. including formatted text and graphics, and paste this 
  97. information into another document. Any pasted text 
  98. becomes part of the document to which it has been 
  99. added and can be changed or edited in any way.

  101.     "One of the best benefits of this product is 
  102. that even a novice can create and view Replica 
  103. documents," said Bill Freedman, product manager of 
  104. network applications for Farallon. "Since Replica is 
  105. distributed in one file on one diskette, the user only 
  106. has to double click the mouse to install. All that's 
  107. required to view and print is simple mouse skills."

  109.     Security options for Replica users creating 
  110. documents include the ability to prevent recipients 
  111. from copying the contents to the clipboard and the 
  112. ability to assign passwords to control who is able to 
  113. open it.

  115. How Replica Documents Maintain Appearance of the 
  116. Original
  117.  
  118.     Replica uses technologies built into the 
  119. operating systems of Windows and Macintosh, providing 
  120. high-quality document representations. The Replica 
  121. cross-platform file format, which is a superset of 
  122. TrueType, GDI and QuickDraw native languages, enables 
  123. storage of all formatting information within the 
  124. Replica document to ensure exact appearance of the 
  125. document on both platforms without additional 
  126. computing resources. Replica uses native technologies 
  127. rather than adding a graphics engine to the operating 
  128. system. As a result, Replica is efficient in its 
  129. operation, requiring a minimally configured PC or 
  130. Macintosh while still presenting an accurate 
  131. representation of the document.

  133.     One of the key reasons Replica creates high-
  134. quality documents is the product's tight integration 
  135. with both Windows and Macintosh font systems, which 
  136. are based on TrueType font technology. TrueType 
  137. provides a better alternative for cross-platform 
  138. imaging than other font technologies such as bitmap 
  139. representations. With TrueType, fonts can scale to any 
  140. size and print exactly as they appear on the screen, 
  141. providing an accurate representation of the font at 
  142. any size or resolution, and eliminating jagged edges.

  144.     Because Replica can "embed" TrueType fonts into 
  145. documents, users are not required to buy any 
  146. additional fonts or utilities to get the highest 
  147. quality font representation. Other font technologies 
  148. such as font approximations and fixed-resolution 
  149. bitmaps don't offer the accuracy Replica provides with 
  150. embedded TrueType fonts.

  154.     Replica for Windows and Replica for Macintosh 
  155. software packages will retail for a U. S. suggested 
  156. retail price (SRP) of $99 per copy. Both versions of 
  157. Replica are available in 10-Packs for $749 SRP.

  159.     Replica for Windows is currently available from 
  160. Farallon resellers worldwide. Replica for Macintosh 
  161. will be available in the fourth quarter of the year, 
  162. and will be cross-platform compatible with the Windows 
  163. version. Each package contains a Replica Creator and a 
  164. Replica Viewer. Replica users are authorized to copy
